Resumen: Blancus es la reciente propuesta artística del fotógrafo Herminio Rodríguez, que se presentó en una exhibición como parte de la agenda del espacio Art Lab. En estas imágenes, el artista invita a reflexionar al espectador, retándole a encontrar formas ocultas en el blanco cegador que inunda las obras.

Abstract: Blancus is the recent artistic proposal from the photographer Herminio Rodríguez, which presented as an exhibition of the Art Lab space’s agenda. In these images, the artist invites the spectator to reflect, challenging them to find hidden figures in the blinding white that floods the images.

Resumen: Hablando Comics es el título del proyecto que se llevó acabo los primeros jueves de cada mes en la Galería Mondo Bizarro, en Rio Piedras. En estos encuentros, diversos participantes dialogaban ante el público acerca de este medio artístico y su importante presencia en Puerto Rico.

Abstract: Hablando Comics [Talking Comics] is the title of the project that takes place every Thursday of every month at the Gallery Mondo Bizarro in Río Piedras. In these talks, different participants have a conversation with the public on this artistic medium and its important presence in Puerto Rico.

Resumen: Dos artistas puertorriqueñas, Carmen Mojica y Nora Quintero, participan junto a otras creadoras latinoamericanas y valencianas en el Festival Miradas de Mujeres 2014, organizado por la asociación Mujeres en las Artes Visuales en España. El festival tiene como objetivo visibilizar el trabajo creativo de mujeres artistas y de reflexionar sobre sus particulares miradas.

Abstract: Two Puerto Rican artists, Carmen Mojica and Nora Quintero, participate together with other Latin American and Valencian female creators in the Festival Miradas de Mujeres 2014 [Women’s Gazes Festival], organized by the association of Women in the Visual Arts in Spain. The festival aims to make visible the creative work of women artists and to reflect upon their particular views.

Resumen: En Camino al Mirador Azul sobresale la exposición, por primera vez, del portafolio original de un grupo de jóvenes artistas, estudiantes del surrealista español Eugenio Fernández Granell. Este grupo, conocido como El Mirador Azul, es el protagonista de la exhibición curada por José Correa Vigier, exhibida en la Galería de Arte de la Universidad de Sagrado Corazón, hasta el 20 de marzo de 2014.

Abstract: In Camino al Mirador Azul, for the first time, an exhibition from the original portfolio of a group of young artists, students of the Spanish surrealist Eugenio Fernández Granell, stands out. This group, known as El Mirador Azul, is the protagonist of the exhibition curated by José Correa Vigier, that was opened at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Art Gallery until March 20, 2014.

Resumen: La exhibición colectiva Suprema felicidad, curada por Brenda J. Caro, se presentó en la Casa del Lago, Centro Cultural de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. La muestra incluyó al puertorriqueño Jason Mena, quien presentó una serie fotográfica, Failed States, en la que reflexiona sobre la relevancia de la política en la vida del ser humano.

Abstract: The colective exhibition Suprema felicidad [Supreme Happiness], curated by Brenda J. Caro, was presented at the Casa del Lago, the Cultural Center of the National Autonomus University of Mexico. The exhibition included the Puerto Rican Jason Mena, who presented a photographic series, Failed States, in which they reflect of the relevance of politics in the life of human beings.

Resumen: Crossing the Line fue una exhibición de pinturas del artista estadounidense Anthony Gianni. Realizada a modo de narración, giró en torno a la ceremonia de línea de cruce, en la que se realiza un ritual de iniciación a los marineros mercantes que cruzarán la línea del Ecuador por primera vez, para asegurarse que la tripulación tolerará los tiempos difíciles en altamar. Crossing the Line estuvo abierta al público hasta el 6 de marzo de 2014 en Walter Otero Contemporary Art.

Abstract: Crossing the Line was an exhibition of paintings by American artist Anthony Gianni. Carried out as a narrative, which revolved around the ceremony of the crossing line, in which a ritual of initiation is performed for the merchant sailors who will cross the Ecuator line for the first time, to ensure that the crew will tolerate the difficult times at sea. Crossing the Line, was open to the public until March 6, 2014 at the Walter Otero Contemporary Art Gallery.

Abstract: Luis Alejandro Rodríguez’ exhibition Hay que cel [You have to be (the to be is implied as ser, but the artist chose a play of words and used cel as in cellphone)] was part of the schedule at Galería 20/20. In it, the artist reflects about the use of technology and the changes that it has provoked in social relationship, especially between children and young people.

Incógnitas lejanas convertidas en gozos cercanos

Resumen: José Gómez Isla y Laura Bravo convocaron a construir una especie de museo imaginario a través del lente de doce fotógrafos, seis españoles y seis puertorriqueños. Con sus obras, se invitaba a disminuir las distancias entre ambas geografías y sus respectivas instituciones universitarias. La exhibición, titulada Universos paralelos: Transvergencias fotográficas entre España y Puerto Rico, estuvo abierta a lo largo marzo de 2014 en la Galería deArte Francisco Oller y la Galería de Bellas Artes 209 de la UPRRP. En noviembre de ese año, se trasladó a la Sala de Arte de la Hospedería de Fonseca, en la Universidad de Salamanca.

Abstract: José Gómez Isla and Laura Bravo López called the public to build a kind of imaginary museum through the lens of twelve photographers, six Spanish and six Puerto Ricans. With their work, they invited us to shorten the distances between both geographies and their respective university institutions. The exhibition, titled Universos Paralelos: Transvergencias fotográficas entre España y Puerto Rico, was open throughout March 2014 in the Galería de Arte Francisco Oller and at the Galería de Bellas Artes 209 of the UPRRP. In November 2014, it was moved to the Sala de Arte de la Hospedería de Fonseca, at the University of Salamanca.

Resumen: Uno de los directores del espacio 20-20 en Santurce, el también artista Izam Zawahra, reúne una docena de creadores en la exhibición Evidentemente, que recoge un conjunto de propuestas experimentales que van desde el dibujo a la pintura, pasando por el ensamblaje y las piezas que proponen una interacción entre el espectador y las redes sociales. Evidentemente estuvo abierta hasta el 26 de febrero en la Liga de Arte de San Juan.

Abstract: One of the directors of the 20-20 space in Santurce, artist Izam Zawahra, gathered a dozen creators in the exhibition Evidentemente [Evidently], in which he collects a set of experimental proposals that go from drawing to painting -with a remarkable cut of social and experimental criticism-, through the assembly and the pieces that propose an interaction between the viewer and social networks. Evidentemente was open until February 26th, 2014 at the Liga de Arte de San Juan.

Resumen: Mecánica del intimismo, una exhibición individual de Cynthia Morales, fue la séptima presentación del Proyecto Graderío, como parte de su residencia en Área: Lugar de Proyectos. La misma fue inaugurada el 23 de noviembre de 2013 y consistió en una serie de piezas que colocan al espectador ante mecanismos de interacción inusuales que invitan a replantearse las relaciones humanas. “

Abstract: Mecánica del intimismo [Mechanism of Intimacy], a solo exhibition by Cynthia Morales, was the seventh presentation of Proyecto Graderío, as part of her residency at Área: Lugar de Proyectos. It was inaugurated on November 23, 2013 and it consisted of a series of pieces that place the spectator before unusual interactions that invite them to rethink human relations.

Resumen: Entender las imágenes y los artefactos a través de su función dentro de su contexto espacial y cultural es la premisa que parece guiar la propuesta curatorial de la exhibición Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898. La muestra examina las producciones artísticas destinadas al uso doméstico dentro del contexto de las casas de los miembros de las élites en los virreinatos de América y en los territorios del Caribe hispánico, entre las que se incluyen obras de José Campeche y Francisco Oller.

Abstract: Understanding images and artifacts through their purpose within their spatial and cultural context is the premise that seems to guide the curatorial proposal of the exhibition Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898. The exhibition examines the artistic productions destined for domestic use within the context of the homes of elite members in the vice-royalties of America and the territories of the Hispanic Caribbean, including works by José Campeche and Francisco Oller.

Ya era hora

Resumen: La exposición colectiva Ya era hora se presentó en la Sala de Arte Contemporáneo de la Casa Zapater, en el contexto de las Noches de Galerías de Ponce, desde el mes de enero hasta febrero de 2014. El grupo de artistas participantes trabaja en la escena artística de San Juan, por lo cual decidieron trasladarse al sur de la isla para compartir con diversos públicos sus acercamientos e interpretaciones, algunas muy conocidas y otras que no habíamos tenido la oportunidad de conocer.

Abstract: The group exhibition Ya era hora [It Was About Time] was presented in the Contemporary Art Hall of the Casa Zapater, in the context of the Gallery Nights in Ponce, from January to February 2014. The group of participating artists work in San Juan, so they decided to move to the South of the island to share their approaches and interpretations with a different audience. Some of these artworks were very well known, while some others offered a new opportunity to be appreciated.

Resumen: De fábulas y quimeras fue el título de una exhibición colectiva a cargo de la curadora Bianca Ortiz, en la cual nos presentó un grupo de artistas diversos en cuanto a medios, temáticas y estilo, que otorgan protagonismo a la figura animal en su obra. Esta iniciativa se prestó a la apertura de diálogos entre géneros visuales y literarios, valiéndose de figuras fantásticas, teriomórficas, mitológicas y espirituales. La exhibición se presentó en Área: Lugar de Proyectos, de diciembre 2013 a enero de 2014.

Abstract: De fábulas y quimeras [On Fables and Chimeras] was a group exhibition curated by Bianca Ortiz, in which she presented a group of diverse artists, in terms of the media, issues, and style they address, working in animals as a main subject. This initiative invited to open some dialogues between visual and literary genres, using fantastic, theriomorphic, mythological and spiritual figures. It was open in Área: Lugar de Proyectos, from December 2013 to January 2014.

¿Cauces y desvíos?

Resumen: Cerrando un ciclo de cuatro exhibiciones realizadas entre México y Marruecos que abordaba situaciones específicas sobre la relación del ser humano con el agua, la artista Jeannette Betancourt presentó la exhibición Cauces y desvíos en el Centro Curatorial La15 desde el mes de noviembre 2013 hasta el 30 de enero de 2014. En la misma la artista materializó el resultado de sus experiencias a través de piezas escultóricas, instalaciones e intervenciones, abordando la temática del agua desde una variedad de medios y materiales.

Abstract: Closing a cycle of four exhibitions held between Mexico and Morocco that addressed specific situations on the relationship between human beings and water, artist Jeannette Betancourt presented the exhibition Cauces y desvíos at the Centro Curatorial La15 from November 2013 to January 30, 2014. In this exhibition, the artist materialized the result of her experiences through sculptural pieces, installations and interventions, addressing water as a subject, from a variety of media and materials.

Resumen: Los artistas Norma Vila y Julio Lugo Rivas reflexionan sobre la sociedad y la economía puertorriqueña a partir de la convocatoria de Saltando Muros, una exposición que convoca artistas iberoamericanos con el propósito de exaltar las posibilidades de la fotografía como herramienta de cambio social en manos de artistas emergentes. El regreso y Maratonistas de calle, los proyectos ganadores, representan a Puerto Rico en una exhibición internacional que cuenta también con países como Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Ecuador, México, Perú, República Dominicana y Uruguay.

Abstract: The artists Norma Vila and Julio Lugo Rivas reflect on Puerto Rican society and economy from the call for Saltando Muros, an exhibition that brings together Ibero-American artists with the purpose of praising the possibilities of photography as a tool of social change in the hands of emerging artists. El regreso [The Return] and Maratonistas de calle [Street Marathon Runners], the winning projects, represent Puerto Rican art in an international exhibition including artists from countries like Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, México, Perú, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay.

Resumen: Compartimento 778 es un espacio dedicado a impulsar la exhibición de las creaciones recientes de artistas establecidos, así como la obra de artistas de nuevas generaciones. Una de ellas fue Los hechizos de mi vida, de Félix Bonilla Gerena, dedicada a Lisa de Kooning, mentora e impulsora de la carrera del artista puertorriqueño en New York. Consta de catorce pinturas de gran formato y de dibujos, cuya iconografía gira alrededor de hechiceras y jardines.

Abstract: Compartimento 778 is a space dedicated to promoting the exhibition of recent creations by established artists, as well as works made by new generations artists. One of these shows was Félix Bonilla Genera’s Los hechizos de mi vida [The Spells of My Life], dedicaded to Lisa de Kooning, mentor and promoter of the Puerto Rican artist in New York. It consists of fourteen large-format paintings and drawings, with an iconography of witches and gardens.

En ella, el artista manifiesta la fórmula postmoderna de la sobreproducción y la comercialización, pero desde una perspectiva del individuo consciente del sistema. / Abstract: Carlos Fajardo’s exhibition Floreros Memepléxicos, was opened until January 31, 2014 at the Eugenio María de Hostos Museum in Mayagüez. In this show, the artist manifests the postmodern overproduction and comercializarion, from the perspective of an individual who is aware of the system.
