Colectivo Marvelous: homenaje a los cómics

Resumen: La Galería Mondo Bizarro: Arte y Cómics, operada por Luis C. Parés y Yasmine Stella Léede (Pernicious Press) inauguró el 24 de mayo la muestra Colectivo Marvelous, que sirve de homenaje a la influencia de los comics de la compañía Marvel, en la producción artística y memoria colectiva de los artistas contemporáneos.

Abstract: Mondo Bizarro Gallery: Art and Comics, directed by Luis C. Parés and Yasmine Stella Léede (Pernicious Press) opened the exhibition Marvelous Collective (Colectivo Marvelous) on May 24th 2013, paying homage to the influence of Marvel comics on the artistic production and collective memory of contemporary artists.

Resumen: Antonio Martorell tuvo su más reciente propuesta plástica en la Galería de Arte de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, titulada Martorell en Sagrado. La muestra es una instalación que compromete al espacio de la sala expositiva, y que fue comisionada en el marco celebratorio de la Capilla Mayor del recinto universitario.

Abstract: Antonio Martorell presented his most recent exhibition at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón Art Gallery, titled Martorell at Sagrado (Martorell en Sagrado). The show is an installation that compromises the space of the exhibition hall, and it was commissioned in the context of the celebration for the Main Chapel of the university campus.

Resumen: La artista S. Damary Burgos presenta sus proyectos expositivos Diáspora en la Galería Guatíbiri (San Juan), y Terrazos en Tallaboa Encarnación (Peñuelas). Ambos proyectos centran sus temáticas en el hogar como símbolo de la familia y de lo que ella nos ofrece: amor, sosiego, seguridad.

Resumen: El pasado 25 de abril se presentó en el Recinto Cerra (# 619.5 de la Calle Cerra en Santurce) la exposición individual más reciente del artista Bobby Cruz, titulada Simplemente… Bobby, presentada como un homenaje a una parte de nuestra cultura popular, enmarcada en conceptos que la marginan.

Abstract: On April 25th, the most recent solo exhibition of the artist Bobby Cruz was presented at the Recinto Cerra (# 619.5 of Cerra Street in Santurce). With the titled Just… Bobby (Simplemente… Bobby), it presented a tribute to a part of our popular culture and in the frame in concepts that contribute to its marginalization.

Resumen: La exposición Un actor en la Casa Blanca: relaciones entre politica, celebridad y cultura popular tuvo lugar en Área: Lugar de proyectos. La muestra reunió pinturas en gris, blanco y negro, mayormente basadas en fotografías de interacciones entre músicos, actores y políticos.

Abstract: The exhibition An Actor in the White House: Relations between Politics, Celebrity and Popular Culture (Un actor en la Casa Blanca: relaciones entre politica, celebridad y cultura popular) took place in Área: Lugar de proyectos. The exhibition brought together paintings in gray, black and white, mostly based on photographs of interactions between musicians, actors and politicians.

Resumen: La galería Roberto Paradise presentó el trabajo de los artistas estadounidenses Austin Eddy y Karla Wozniak. El primero ofrece una muestra de pinturas en blanco y negro responden al tema de las emociones humanas. La segunda exhibe una serie de obras en papel de pequeño formato como parte del Trailer Park Proyects. Con este tipo de iniciativas queda clara intención de esta galaería de cultivar lazos profesionales con artistas e instituciones internacionales, al tiempo que ofrece a su público un vistazo a otras escenas artísticas lejos de Puerto Rico.

Abstract: Roberto Paradise gallery presented the work of the American artists Austin Eddy and Karla Wozniak. The first one exhibited black and white paintings that responded to the topic of the human emotions. The second one showed a series of small format artworks on paper, as part of the Trailer Park Proyects. With this type of initiatives, this gallery makes clear the intention of cultivating professional relationships with international artists and institutions, while offering their public a sneak peek to other art scenes away from Puerto Rico.

“Unpainting”: una idea sobre la deconstrucción de la pintura

Resumen: El 11 de abril de 2013 la galería Walter Otero Contemporary Art inauguró la muestra del artista Michael Linares, titulada Unpainting, que aborda conceptualmente la pintura para deconstruir la naturaleza de su ejercicio desde la puesta en escena crítica de sus elementos y de sus cualidades formales. Las piezas reflexionan y se acercan conceptualmente a cada una de las fases que por tradición son requeridas como destrezas por la crítica formalista para la valorización de una pintura como objeto de arte.

Abstract: On April 11 2013, Walter Otero Contemporary Art gallery opened Michael Linares’ work exhibition, titled Unpainting, which conceptually approaches painting to deconstruct the nature of its exercise from the critical work of its elements and its formal qualities. The art pieces offer a reflection and a conceptual approach to each of the phases that are considered traditional skill requisites by formalist critics to appreciate a painting as an art object.

Resumen: La artista puertorriqueña Ivelisse Jiménez fue galardonada en el certamen Arte Laguna de la Bienal de Venecia con su obra Detour #21. Este importante reconocimiento le sirvió a la artista a estrechar conexiones durante la exposición en una de las bienales de arte más celebradas a nivel internacional.

Abstract: The Puerto Rican artist Ivelisse Jiménez was awarded at the Arte Laguna contest of the Venice Biennale for her artwork Detour #21. This important recognition served the artist to strengthen connections during the exhibition in one of the most celebrated international art biennials.

Resumen: Del 28 febrero al 30 junio 2013 se presentó en el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico la exposición de la obra reciente del reconocido pintor puertorriqueño Julio Suárez, titulada Lugar específico. La muestra estuvo compuesta por diez pinturas abstractas en las que dominaban las figuras geométricas.

Abstract: From February 28 to June 30, 2013, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico presented Lugar específico [Specific Place], an exhibition of the latest artwork of the renowned Puerto Rican painter Julio Suárez. The exhibition consisted of ten abstract paintings, where geometric figures had prevalence.

Resumen: En un impulso de rescatar y visibilizar la obra de importantes figuras del arte puertorriqueño, la Galería de Arte de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón presenta la exhibición Luis Muñoz Lee: presencia en la ausencia. Para este artista, la pintura era un espacio de expansión en la que lograba escapar del rigor de su profesión como periodista, adentrándose en espacios subjetivos, sin dejar los controles que el dibujo arquitectónico exige. Su personalidad, su talante moderno, caribeño y, particularmente, sanjuanero se evidencian en esta exhibición, curada por la Dra. Teresa Tió.

Abstract: With the objective of rescuing and making visible the work of important figures of Puerto Rican art, the Art Gallery of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón presents the exhibition Luis Muñoz Lee: presencia en la ausencia [Luis Muñoz Lee: Presence in Absence]. For this artist, painting was a space for expansion, where he could escape from the rigor of his profession as a journalist, entering subjective spaces, without leaving the control that architectural drawing demands. His personality and his modern profile, both being from the Caribbean Sea and, in particular, San Juan, are evident in this exhibition, which is curated by Dr. Teresa Tió.

Resumen: Veredas en el camino es una muestra antológica de la obra de Carmelo Fontánez, en la que se ilustra panorámicamente la diversidad y la calidad de la carrera del artista. Las salas del Museo de Arte de Bayamón se llenan de muestras de las distintas vertientes del maestro, algunas de las cuales aparecen aquí atisbadas en una selección razonada.

Abstract: Veredas en el camino [Paths Along the Way] is a retrospective exhibition of the work of Carmelo Fontánez, in which the diversity and quality of the artist’s career are illustrated in a panoramic view. The rooms of the Bayamón Art Museum are filled with samples of different aspects of this master artist, some of which are shown here in a reasoned selection.

Resumen: El Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico presenta la exhibición René Santos: el grado cero de la imagen, con el propósito de comprender el trasfondo intelectual y el método de trabajo de este artista. Son escasas las obras de Santos en colecciones privadas y en museos, y su figura no ha sido suficientemente reconocida, por lo que esta exhibición pone de relieve la importancia de su legado y de su particular iconografía.

Abstract: The Museo de Arte de Puerto presents the exhibition René Santos: el grado cero de la imagen [René Santos: the degree zero of the image], with the purpose of understanding the intellectual background and working method of this artist. The works of Santos in private collections and museums are scarce, and his figure has not been sufficiently recognized, so this exhibition highlights the importance of his legacy and his particular iconography.

Resumen: La exhibición Basura, del artista Nick Quijano, abrió sus puertas en el Museo de Las Américas, San Juan, el 6 de diciembre de 2012. Esta contiene más de cien obras, entre ellas ensamblaje, instalación, pintura y fotografía realizadas a lo largo de tres décadas de la carrera del artista, en su mayoría utilizando desperdicios encontrados en la Playa Cascajo de La Perla.

Abstract: Basura (Trash), an exhibition by artist Nick Quijano, opened its doors in The Museo de Las Américas (Museum of the Americas), San Juan, on December 6, 2012. Basura shows more than one hundred works, including assemblage, painting and photography made over three decades of the artist’s career, using, in most cases, waste material found in Cascajo Beach, in La Perla.

Resumen: El proyecto curatorial Puerto Rico: Puerta al paisaje abrió su primera parte, Feroz/Feraz, el 6 de febrero en el Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte de la UPR. Curada por Lilliana Ramos Collado, esta exposición explora el género artístico del paisaje, en obras que revelan la intromisión del humano en la tierra que se retrata y se piensa.

Abstract: Feroz/Feraz (Fierce/Fertile), the first part of the curatorial project Puerto Rico: Puerta al paisaje [Puerto Rico: Gateway to the Landscape], opened on February 6 at the UPR Museum of History, Anthropology and Art. Curated by Lilliana Ramos Collado, this exhibition explores the artistic genre of landscape, in works that reveal the intrusion of the human being in the land that is portrayed and thought.
