Del olor del barro: entrevista a Heidi Anne Vera

Resumen: Elizabeth Robles entrevista a la ceramista Heidi Anne Vera, con la que comparte el entusiasmo por el barro como material de producción artística. Con ella repasa los inicios de su carrera, su dilatada experiencia artística y la filosofía alrededor de muchas de sus creaciones. En ella destaca el concepto del “aquí y ahora” en el ritual del uso que confiere a gran parte de sus obras.

Abstract: Elizabeth Robles interviews ceramic artist Heidi Anne Vera, sharing their passion for clay as a material for making art. Both artists review the beginnings of Vera’s career, her extensive experience, and the philosophy of her artworks. The concept of “here and now” is highlighted here, as part of the ritual use of many of her pieces.

A través del ojo de la arcilla

Resumen: Como resultado de una investigación artística de tres años, Javier Orfón propone un diálogo con nuestro pasado en su reciente exhibición, El ojo de arcilla. Utilizando técnicas y estilos ancestrales, el artista nos invita, literalmente, a sentarnos a la mesa para descubrir cómo lo antiguo y lo contemporáneo pueden encontrar sus numerosos vínculos para llegar a un mayor entendimiento de lo que, por mucho tiempo, nos pareció que había caído en el olvido. /

Abstract: As a result of a three years artistic research, Javier Orfón opens a dialogue with our past in his most recent exhibition, El ojo de arcila [The Eye of Clay]. Using ancient techniques and styles, the artist literally invites us to sit at the table to discover how the ancient and the contemporary can be related to reach a greater understanding of what we had long thought to be forgotten.

Del sonido del barro: una entrevista a Gadiel Rivera

Resumen: Gadiel Rivera, artista, maestro del torno y de las técnicas de cerámica a mano, conversa sobre algunos procesos y conceptos en su trabajo. Tras recibir la beca de la Liga de Arte de San Juan a sus dieciséis años, estudió con Carmelo Fontánez, y con la artista y antropóloga Gloria Duncan. Se inicia entonces en la cerámica con Sylvia Blanco, en la Universidad Interamericana, a la par que continuaba sus estudios de bachillerato en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de San Juan. Esta entrevista ofrece un perfil de su formación artística, delineando la actividad vibrante de pensarse como creador plástico.

Abstract: Gadiel Rivera, artist and a master of pottery and ceramic techniques at hand, talks about some processes and concepts in his work. After being recipient of the Art League of San Juan grant at sixteen, he studied with Carmelo Fontánez, and with the artist and anthropologist Gloria Duncan. He then began working in ceramics with Sylvia Blanco, at the Interamerican University, while continuing undergraduate studies at the School of Plastic Arts in San Juan. This interview offers a profile of his artistic training, outlining the vibrant activity of thinking as a plastic creator.

Cristina Córdova: el hechizo profundo del barro

Resumen: Cristina Córdova presenta Salvajeando, su trabajo más reciente, en una exhibición individual que reúne nueve piezas en cerámica con la figura humana como gran protagonista. La producción de Córdova se caracteriza por un magistral dominio del barro, que en esta muestra queda plenamente confirmado.

Abstract: Salvajeando is Cristina Córdova´s most recent exhibition, which brings together nine ceramic art pieces, with the human figure as a main idea in the work. Córdova’s art production shows a masterful knowledge of clay works, fully confirmed in this exhibition.

Permutación paradójica

Resumen: La exhibición Permutación: Cambio del orden de un número de cosas sin que altere su naturaleza, de Claudia Torres Guillemard, tiene a la cerámica como medio protagonista, la cual es conducida a terrenos iconográficos y simbólicos poco frecuentados.

Abstract: The exhibition Permutation: Change of the Order of a Number of Things without Altering its Nature, by Claudia Torres Guillemard, is focused on ceramics as a medium, and taken to not very frequent iconographic and symbolic discussions.

Nueva sangre, nuevo arte, en el RUM

Resumen: Gracias al empeño de profesores y de estudiantes, las artes plásticas encuentran en el RUM un espacio dinámico donde exhibir y donde intercambiar experiencias y reflexiones. La profusión de escenarios y de vivencias relacionadas con el arte vienen impulsadas por la labor de las asociaciones estudiantiles.

Isla recreada, arribada en el RUM

Abstract: After a long wait and uncertain whereabouts, Isla Recreada, by Susana Espinosa, is standing, impressive and triumphant, through the staircase of MuSA, the Art Museum at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez Campus, which will open to the public in the coming months.

La flota de cerámica

Resumen: En celebración de los 60 años que el Ballets de San Juan cumpliría en 2014, el artista Jaime Suárez convocó a sus colegas ceramistas a crear una flota de arcilla en la Fuente del Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce. Ante la respuesta de un grupo nutrido de artistas, los eventos de la instalación de los barquillos el 15 de diciembre de 2013 constituyen una narrativa amena que resalta el compañerismo y la unión de esfuerzos por un bien común que, como efecto colateral, ha insuflado un aliento renovador al medio de la cerámica en Puerto Rico.

Abstract: In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Ballets de San Juan in 2014, the artist Jaime Suárez summoned his fellow ceramists to create a fleet of clay in the Fountain of the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce. Given the response of a large group of artists, the events of the installation of the wafers on December 15, 2013, constitute a pleasant narrative that highlights the companionship and the union of efforts for a common good that, as a collateral effect, has insufflated a breath of renewal into the ceramic medium in Puerto Rico.

La cerámica como excusa: entrevista a Sylvia Blanco

Resumen: Sylvia Blanco constituye uno de los nombres imprescindibles de la cerámica contemporánea puertorriqueña. Su producción abarca un numeroso conjunto de formas y técnicas que le granjearon un notable reconocimiento a nivel nacional e internacional, como fueron los prestigiosos galardones otorgados en Faenza y Zagreb, así como en el Certamen de Arte del Ateneo Puertorriqueño. En esta entrevista, realizada en 2013 y publicada a manera de homenaje tras la pérdida de la artista en 2017, Blanco reveló algunos de los aspectos más destacados de su dilatada trayectoria.

Abstract: Sylvia Blanco is one of the essential names of contemporary Puerto Rican ceramics. Her production includes a set of numerous forms and techniques that made her earn a remarkable recognition in a national and international scale, receiving prestigious awards granted in Faenza and Zagreb, as well as in the Art Contest of the Ateneo Puertorriqueño. In this interview, taken place in 2013 and published as a tribute after the loss of the artist in 2017, Blanco revealed some of the highlights of her long career.
