The title \u201cTonguas\u201d combines \u201ctongues\u201d and \u201clenguas,\u201d indicating the open, multilingual, and inclusive nature of the group\u2019s activities, \u201cidiomas,\u201d and aesthetics. Tonguas begins with the premise that Spanish is at the heart of Puerto Rican identity. At the same time, the collective has also held poet Victor Hern\u00e1ndez Cruz\u2019s statement to be worthy: \u201cBilingualism is not a limitation when it is in the hands of the writers\u201d (Red Beans, 1991, pp. 9-10). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journal is edited as part of ENGL 3037-The Role of the Literary Magazine in Contemporary Literary Production. Professor Dannabang Kuwabang acts as the current Superving Editor. Although it originated in the English Department of the Humanities Faculty of the University of Puerto Rico, R\u00edo Piedras, participants include students from all faculties and writers from the larger community. Tonguas poetry \u201cjam sessions\u201d tend to bring together poets of all ages, but most of the events celebrate and promote the poetic innovations of the new generation of emerging writers. Participants have embraced both formal literary techniques and forms of orature and music\u2013urban youth cultural expressions such as hip-hop and graffiti, along with \u201cDef Poetry Jam\u201d and slam style-performance poetry. <\/p>\n\n\n

Tonguas has also attempted to bring Spanish-dominant, bilingual, and English-dominant writers into greater contact with Caribbean writers through readings and workshops with such artists as Puerto Rican poets Willie Perdomo and Victor Hern\u00e1ndez Cruz and novelist Edgardo Vega Yunqu\u00e9, Dominican poet Sherezada \u201cChiqui\u201d Vicioso, Jamaican poet Lorna Goodison, St. Lucian poet Kendel Hippolyte, and Miami-based Cuban and Dominican-descended poet Adrian Castro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tonguas<\/em> is published once a year in May and accepts submissions of original poetry, fiction, creative essay, one act dramatic plays, and visual art from all University of Puerto Rico students of the R\u00edo Piedras campus. Artists and writers interested in submitting their work for consideration should see the following the Submission Guidelines<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n
