Established in 1940, the Department of English of the College of Humanities <\/a>of the R\u00edo Piedras Campus<\/a> University of Puerto Rico offers an undergraduate major with areas of emphasis in Literature or Linguistics and Communication; undergraduate minors in English, a Master of Arts degree with specialization in Literature or Linguistics, and a Ph.D. in Literature and Language of the English-speaking Caribbean with specialization in Literature or Linguistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of English is committed to broadening students\u2019 education through a wide variety of critical approaches and courses ranging from early British and American to African, Caribbean, and diaspora literature and culture, as well as linguistics, writing, film, translation, conversational English, and human communication. It also affords students many opportunities to meet eminent writers and scholars at conferences, symposia, workshops, and seminars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students in other majors looking for second year English courses, general education literature courses, or to meet other requirements in English can select from our wide variety of courses in literature, language, and communication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
