The English Department of the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras offers an M.A. and a Ph.D. program in Linguistics. The Department has specialists in all the important facets of the exciting field of linguistics, and graduate students benefit from faculty research interests in areas such as Creole Studies, Language Acquisition, Ethnography of Speaking, Bilingualism, Sociolinguistics, Phonology, Syntax, Language Typology, Language Planning, and Historical Linguistics.

In addition, the Department's Ph.D. program brings in leading scholars in Linguistics to give special presentations and workshops. Another important event is the 'Islands in Between Conference' that is held each fall on a different island in the Eastern Caribbean. The English Department also publishes Sargasso, a journal of Caribbean Language and Literature in which linguistics articles regularly appear.

An electronic index of most Ph.D. dissertations in the Humanities and many Master's Thesis. Provides a long abstract as well as 40 Preview pages. Efficient ordering on-line service, although Dissertations may also be requested through Inter Library Loan in Main floor, Reference Room, Lazaro Library (sometimes requiring a shipping fee).

Contains articles and works on Hispanic America and the Caribbean. Most sources available in the Caribbean Regional Library at the UPR's Lazaro Library and many complete texts now available on-line. It is dedicated to the description and analysis of primary linguistic data, and all of its articles contain original or hard-to-access data from a wide variety of languages. The underlying philosophy of the journal is that exposure to diverse linguistic data is critical for theorizing. Requires subscription.
