Maritza Stanchich was born in Jersey City, NJ, to Peruvian and Croatian immigrants, and grew up in suburban New Jersey just outside New York City. She studied English and Journalism at Rutgers University, earning a BA in 1986, during and after which time she lived and worked as an award-winning newspaper journalist in New York's Hudson Valley. In 1992, she moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she earned an MA in English at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, continued working as an award-winning newspaper journalist, and began teaching at UPR. She moved to Northern California in 1997 for doctoral studies at the University of California and returned to Puerto Rico to teach at UPR upon completing her doctorate in 2003. Her areas of intellectual interest include Caribbean Literature, 19th and 20th century American Literature, and U.S. Latino studies with a focus on literature of the Puerto Rican diaspora. Other interests are the developments of nationalism, discourses of U.S. expansion, and vernacular literatures. Her teaching of literature is grounded in historical, socio-political context and post colonial theory. In addition, Ms. Stanchich is also passionate about yoga, fitness, organic foods, jazz, latin dance, the arts, as well as family and friends.
