Brief biography

Alicia Pousada, daughter of Gallego immigrants, was born in Mt. Kisco, NY and raised in the Hudson River hamlet of Montrose. She received her B. A. in Languages and Literature (Honors Program) in 1976 from Hunter College, CUNY and her M. A. and Ph. D. in Educational Linguistics in 1978 and 1984, respectively, from the University of Pennsylvania. During her career, she has carried out sociolinguistic research in the Puerto Rican communities of North Philadelphia and East Harlem, taught linguistics and language pedagogy in numerous colleges in New York and New Jersey, served as Title VII bilingual program evaluator in N.Y.C. public schools, and worked as E.S.L. instructor in Adult Basic Education, community college, and private tutoring programs. Since 1987, she has been a professor of linguistics in the English Department of the College of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. At different points, she has served as Conversational English Coordinator and Academic Adviser. At present, she is the Director of the Lewis E. Richardson Seminar Room. She also chairs the Academic Technology Committee, publishes the on-line English Academic Technology Bulletin, and serves as the webmaster of the department website. Her publications and presentations focus on the areas of language policy and planning, multilingualism, and teaching of English as a Second Language world-wide. Among her many other interests are: computer technology, jewelry making, science fiction, and world music.
