Brief biography |
 |
Julie Parenteau grew up in the small farm communities of the Midwestern United States. She completed her B.A. in Public Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and went on to obtain M.A and Ph.D. degrees in Communication Studies from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Though her training has been as a communication generalist, Julie specializes in Intercultural Communication, cultural adaptation, and training and development.
Julie has always been enamored with life in other places around the world and as such, has spent time studying and traveling in Europe and learning foreign languages. She speaks fluent Spanish and French, and has dabbled in Japanese, Italian, and American Sign Language. These interests fueled her desire to work outside of the mainland thus, she was honored when offered the opportunity to work at the UPR. In her time here she has taught public speaking, intercultural communication, communication theory, advanced composition, and English as a second language courses. She looks forward to teaching small group, nonverbal, and organizational communication in the near future.
Currently, Julie serves as the coordinator of the Cultural Affairs Committee within the English Department. She is also an active member of the National Communication Association, Society for Intercultural Education Training and Research, Speech Communication Association of Puerto Rico, and the International Communication Association.
When not working, Julie enjoys living in Puerto Rico. The Island has become her home away from home, and she tries to take advantage of as many cultural opportunities as possible including: going to the beaches, concerts, salsa dancing, and eating as much mofongo con camarones as possible. She also loves to travel in other parts of the world and is an avid sports fan. Reading, scrapbooking, watching movies, and enjoying quality time with friends are other activities that please her.
