Brief biography

Go back to the top of the page

Dr. Olsen has had a varied career.  He began his career by spending a "year abroad" in England in 1970 after graduating from high school.  He developed his passion for theatre there and later enrolled and graduated from a drama school in London in 1976.  He pursued a career in acting in London and New York before returning to college to obtain his undergraduate degree in Journalism.  Of course, he began writing about theatre and the arts, so a friend suggested he pursue an advanced degree in theatre.  He did so and wrote his dissertation on the "arts lab," a concept developed in England in the 1960s for bringing the arts to everyone.   He has written extensively on intercultural theatre as well as on semiotics, African performance, and contemporary Britiish and American theatre.  He is looking forward to adding Latino and Caribbean theatre to his areas of expertise.
