Brief biography

Emily Krasinski Colón, half Polish, half Puerto Rican, was born in Puerto Rico and raised in the tropics (Haiti, Miami, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico). She received a B.S. in Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University (during which she spent a junior-year-abroad in Rio de Janeiro, absorbing the Portuguese language and Brazilian music). She turned down a fellowship for graduate studies to return to Puerto Rico and sing. Conservatory-trained, she was a member and vocal arranger of the quartet, Las Caribelles, for 13 years. During this time, she squeezed in an M.A. from NYU in Special Education and another M.A. from UPR in Linguistics. Since 1979, she has been a professor of linguistics in the English Department of the College of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, in 1990. Besides her academic and research interests in first, second, and simultaneous language acquisition, she is committed to improving the resources for the development of non-native English on the Río Piedras campus. She served as ESL Coordinator for the English Department for many years and is currently Resident Professor for the Area of Linguistic Competency in English at the Center for Academic Excellence.
