Brief biography |

Mirerza González-Vélez's teaching and research interests focus on the cultural and social role of communication and media outlets in the production and representation of imagined communities. She is especially interested in the cultural and critical aspects of Spanish media discourse. Her research has appeared in a variety of academic publications, including The Journal of Communication Inquiry and Political Communication . She is currently serving as member of the editorial advisory board of The Journal of Communication Inquiry , treasurer of the Speech Communication Association of Puerto Rico, and an active member of the National Communication Association and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication where she has presented several of her research papers.
González-Vélez holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication and Journalism from the University of Iowa and an M.A. in Communication and a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Puerto Rico. Before coming to the UPR, she was an Instructor for the Latin American Studies Program at the University of Iowa. At the present time, she teaches conceptual and hands-on courses in communication, such as communication theory, intercultural communication, organizational communication, and public speaking. She has recently designed a course in communication ethics. She also teaches the course titled Cultura Popular y Comunicación Masiva in the College of General Studies.
González-Vélez's professional experience includes five years as co-editor of special editorial supplements at El Vocero newspaper and one year as a reporter for the UPR newspaper Diálogo where she helped in the design of the student-oriented section titled "Entre estudiantes."
