Requirements for Graduation

Go back to the top of the page
1. An academic concentration in either literature, linguistics or related field;
2. ENGL 5005 (Seminar in Critical Writing);
3. a minimum of 27 credits at the 6000 level passed with an average of B (3.0) or better (including ENGL 6415: Introduction to Literary Criticism and Theory), as well as 3 credits in linguistics and 3 credits at the 6000 level as free electives for literature students;
4. a reading knowledge of a language other than English and Spanish (see Foreign Language Requirement section);
5. a passing grade on a four-hour written examination;
6. the completion of an acceptable M.A. thesis.

To meet the residency requirement, a student must complete at least six (6) credits for each of two semesters. Students should not take more than twelve (12) hours of course-work during a regular semester or more than six (6) hours during the summer session.

The period of time allowed for the Master's Degree in the Department of English is five (5) years. Only under extraordinary circumstances will requests for extensions be considered and those will normally not exceed a one-year period. Time is measured from initial entry to the program, and is based on academic years, that is, ending either December 15 or May 15. "Time out" is counted, unless the student officially withdraws from the program and then subsequently applies as a new student. Petitions for extensions must be made in writing to the Graduate Steering Committee at least three months prior to the end of the five-year period. A letter of support from the adviser and a solidly conceived work plan must accompany a student's petition. Last-minute requests may be summarily denied.

Observing the time limit is in large part the student's responsibility, although the Department will attempt to stay abreast of the student's progress and advise the student of potential problems. The student should take seriously the advice of his/her adviser and of other members of the Graduate Committee, and to try to complete the degree with the greatest dispatch possible, given the student's particular situation. Meeting the various deadlines of the program can only work to the long-range benefit of the student.
