These requirements remain flexible, and "conditional" admission is often possible even though the student does not have the equivalent of an undergraduate major in English. The specialization in Linguistics requires students to have had an introductory Linguistics course (ENGL 4205 or the equivalent in any language or department), plus three additional hours in Linguistics. The specialization in Literature requires students to have had survey courses in English and North American literatures and at least one advanced writing course.
Two (2) letters of recommendation are required, as well as two (2) official transcripts, and a personal statement essay. For electronic graduate admission (APPLY YOURSELF):https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=UPR-GRAD
Promising M.A. applicants who meet some but not all of the requirements for admission are, at times, allowed to enroll as "Transitory" students in order to fulfill the missing undergraduate requirements. A maximum of nine (9) credits taken as a "Transitory" student, or taken prior to official admission, in general, can be accredited ( with approval of the Graduate Committee ) to the M.A. program. (See Reglamento General de los Programas Graduados [October 2000] of the College of Humanities, sections 5.3, 5.4 [pages 10-11] for additional information on "Conditional" and "Transitory" admissions.)
